I have a confession. Egg rolls are one of my favorite appetizers.

Almost any egg roll will do, too. It doesn’t matter if it’s at a Chinese restaurant, fast food, frozen food, gas station roller, or homemade, I love them.

Switching to keto means missing out on the deliciously fried egg roll wrappers, at least until I get around to experimenting with some recipes for them. Until then, I want to get to the heart of the egg roll recipe.

The filling.

I don’t need the wrapper when the filling is the flavor I’m ultimately looking for. With that said, amazingly, when you take the wrapper out of the equation suddenly I’m a bit more picky about my egg roll taste.

I’ve tried several different egg rolls in a bowl, and found that none of them met my taste standards. It was either lack of seasoning, strange flavor combinations, or too much of certain flavors. The biggest thing I ran into was none of the recipes I tried made me feel like I was eating egg roll filling.

There was something missing from the recipe and I couldn’t put my finger on it, so I started researching traditional egg roll recipes. I have no idea if the recipes I found really were traditional, or as old as they claimed. One author stated her recipe was traditional and had been in her family for over 500 years. My recipe is not even close to her recipe, but she did give me some insights to further research, such as, should I include egg in my egg roll bowl?

The official reason egg rolls are called egg rolls still evades me. I’ve found many explanations, and few of them agree. Luckily I’m not here to crack that mystery, I’m here to share my version of the egg roll bowl and I’m quite happy with it.

Instructions

  1. Brown ground pork in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add coleslaw vegetable mix and allow it cook down.

  3. Add in mushrooms and remaining seasonings. Simmer for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Garnish with additional chives if desired.

Recipe Notes

Chinese five spice is a potent spice. Even 1/8 tsp may be too strong if you don't care for the flavor. Drop the amount to just a pinch or eliminate completely if it's too strong for you.

Sweetener amount is based on a keto friendly powdered sweetener, not liquid drops. Adjust amounts as necessary for your taste.
