A simple taco salad with a spicy kick, perfect for taco night.
One of my favorite ways to eat a taco salad are with flakey flour tortillas and crushed Doritos mixed in. Since switching to keto obviously I can’t have the tortilla shell, nor the Doritos, though I’ve been wanting to try Quest protein chips in nacho cheese flavor to see if they would provide a similar quality.
For now my answer to the Doritos, since I can’t eat them I went for a spicy seasoning to see if I could at least get a hint of the flavor. Topping the salad with a sprinkling of creole seasoning did the job until I can find something else to give me the flavor profile I want.
Taco Salad Ideas
You can use whatever lettuce you’d like for this salad, however my preference is to use romaine. It has a wonderful crunch, and gives more of a taco feel than spinach.
Also, feel free to use your favorite cheese. I’ve always been a cheddar cheese fan when it comes to taco salads, however I’ve recently started using queso fresco in some recipes so I might give it a try as well.
At a local Mexican restaurant I recently discovered a taco meat that has more oregano than cumin or chili powder. I didn’t care for it as much in enchiladas, but I loved it in tacos. My plan is to speak with some of the staff to see if I can learn more about their taco seasoning to see if it’s a popular regional seasoning.
